Evidence-based care model

Haven takes pride in the clinical rigor we bring to headache and migraine care. Our care model was developed by leading United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) certified headache specialists, and all our clinicians bring prior experience in headache medicine. Additionally, all our clinicians undergo an intensive onboarding process before seeing patients. We stay up-to-date on clinical evidence and guidelines from UCNS and the American Headache Society (AHS) and use purpose-built technology supported by advanced data analytics to achieve symptom control faster than traditional clinics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatments do you use for migraine?

At Haven, we take a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to treat migraine. Our treatment options include:

  1. Preventive Medications: These are prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine. Options may include oral medications, CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) inhibitors, or procedures like Botox.
  2. Acute Medications: These are used to relieve migraine symptoms during an attack. We prescribe triptans, NSAIDs, antiemetics, and gepants, depending on the patient’s specific needs and medical history.
  3. Lifestyle Modifications: We work with patients to manage migraine through diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep hygiene. This holistic approach is crucial in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine.
  4. Non-Pharmacological Therapies: We may recommend cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, or acupuncture as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
  5. Procedural Treatments: While we focus on telehealth services, we also have partnerships with specialists across California to provide Botox injections, nerve blocks, and other in-person procedures that can help manage migraine.
  6. Proactive Monitoring and Support: Our telehealth model includes daily text-based headache diaries and regular follow-up consultations to monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.

By combining these approaches, we aim to provide personalized and effective migraine care that improves our patients’ quality of life.

Why virtual-first care?

Virtual care offers several key advantages that make it an increasingly popular option for healthcare delivery:

  1. Accessibility: Virtual care breaks down geographic barriers, providing access to healthcare services for patients in remote, rural, or underserved areas where specialty care might not be readily available. This is particularly important for individuals who may have difficulty traveling due to distance, mobility issues, or lack of transportation.
  2. Convenience: Patients can access care from the comfort of their homes, reducing the need for travel, taking time off work, or arranging childcare. This convenience leads to increased patient satisfaction and better adherence to follow-up appointments.
  3. Timeliness: Virtual care often allows for quicker access to healthcare providers, reducing wait times for consultations and enabling timely interventions. This can be crucial for managing chronic conditions or addressing acute issues before they escalate.
  4. Cost-Effectiveness: Virtual visits are often less expensive for both patients and healthcare systems because they reduce overhead costs, minimize the need for physical infrastructure, and lower the cost of care delivery. Patients also save on travel expenses and time away from work.
Do you perform in-person procedures like Botox or nerve blocks?

While we focus on providing comprehensive telehealth services, we understand the importance of certain in-person procedures like Botox injections and nerve blocks in managing chronic migraine. To ensure our patients have access to these essential treatments, we have established partnerships with providers across California who specialize in these procedures. This allows us to refer our patients for in-person care, ensuring they receive all treatments necessary for effective migraine care.

Do you prescribe opioids or barbiturates?

We prioritize safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment options for our patients. As part of our commitment to providing the highest quality of care, we do not prescribe any opioids or barbiturate-containing substances (Fiorecet, Fiorinal) for headache or migraine management.

These medications can carry significant risks, including dependency and medication overuse headaches. Instead, we focus on a comprehensive approach that includes acute and preventive treatments, non-opioid medications, lifestyle modifications, and innovative therapies tailored to each patient's needs. Our goal is to help our patients achieve more good days and improved quality of life through safe and sustainable treatment strategies.

How do you prevent ER visits?

At Haven, we focus on preventing emergency room visits by providing comprehensive and proactive care tailored to each patient's specific needs. Our approach includes:

  1. Personalized Treatment Plans: We develop individualized treatment plans that emphasize preventive therapies to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches, thereby minimizing the need for emergency care.
  2. Proactive Monitoring: Our daily text-based headache diaries and regular follow-up consultations help us monitor patient progress and intervene early if symptoms worsen, preventing conditions from escalating to the point of needing emergency care.
  3. Urgent Care Partnerships: We’ve established partnerships with local urgent care centers, enabling our patients to receive acute injections when necessary, avoiding the need for ER visits.Home Infusion
  4. Home Infusion Services: For patients requiring more intensive treatment during an acute attack, we offer partnerships with infusion centers that provide home infusions, ensuring timely and effective care in the comfort of their own homes.

By leveraging these strategies, we help our patients manage their symptoms effectively and reduce the likelihood of needing emergency room visits.

How do I refer a patient?

While Haven accepts patients who come to us without a referral, we have a dedicated submission process for providers through the “Refer a Patient” button above. This ensures your patients receive timely and specialized care tailored to their headache and migraine needs.

Do patients outside of California have access to Haven?

Haven is currently only available to patients in California. To receive care from us, your patient must be physically located within the state during their virtual visit. We are planning to expand our comprehensive headache and migraine care to other states soon. Please stay tuned for updates on our expansion.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans in California and offer a cash payment option for those with HMO plans or who prefer to pay out-of-pocket. Our goal is to make accessing our services as convenient and straightforward as possible for all patients, regardless of their insurance status.
